Children Of Coal And Iron

During the nineteenth century in Scotland, children as young as four entered the dark pits and fiery foundries alongside their parents. This historical study explores the expansion of the Scottish coal and iron industries during the 1800s, detailing the harsh realities of industrialization. Through vivid descriptions and primary historical evidence—including accounts from the 1842 Coal Report—the narrative outlines the physical dangers of underground mining, iron production techniques, cramped worker housing, and limited schooling. It highlights how industrial growth reshaped local towns while mine owners exercised total control over daily life. Written by history educators Iain Rose and Donald MacLean, this text brings key events of the Industrial Revolution into focus with period illustrations, maps, and historical context.

The Discovery Of The Titanic

The Discovery of the Titanic by Dr. Robert D. Ballard is the gripping firsthand account of the search for the legendary ocean liner and the expeditions that finally located her on the floor of the North Atlantic. Seventy-three years after the Titanic sank in 1912, Ballard and a joint French-American expedition discovered the wreck and photographed her standing upright on the ocean floor. Returning in 1986, Ballard descended 2½ miles in a tiny three-man submarine to explore the wreck, while the robotic vehicle Jason Junior ventured inside the ship, revealing the Grand Staircase and chandeliers unseen for decades. Across eleven dives, the team explored the Titanic, debris field and severed stern, capturing remarkable photographs. Enriched with archival images, charts, paintings and a detailed photo-mosaic fold-out.
