The Compassionate English...

In The Compassionate Englishwoman, Robert Eales tells the remarkable story of Emily Hobhouse, the British humanitarian whose efforts exposed the suffering of Boer women and children during the Anglo-Boer War. Travelling alone through war-torn South Africa, Hobhouse investigated conditions in the concentration camps established by the British military and campaigned tirelessly for reform. Eales recounts her courageous mission, the resistance she faced from the British government and press, and the lasting impact of her work on public awareness of the humanitarian crisis. The book offers a compelling account of one of the most significant figures of the Boer War.

The Caged Bird Sang No...

This is Major General Philip Efiong’s account of the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War (1967–1970). As a key player and second-in-command to Biafran leader General Ojukwu, Efiong details the January and July 1966 coups and the ensuing ethnic conflicts. Forced to escape to the East after the second coup, Efiong recounts the breakdown of talks that led to the Eastern Region's secession and the outbreak of war in July 1967. During the conflict, Efiong served as Chief of General Staff. When Ojukwu fled, he handed power to Efiong, who performed the final task of leading a delegation to Lagos to negotiate peace and deliver Biafra’s surrender.

Hadrian's Wall

Hadrian’s Wall examines the Roman Empire’s most spectacular British monument. Stretching from the Tyne to the Solway Firth, this massive fortification physically divided Britain, serving as a strategic barrier between Roman civilization and northern barbarian tribes. The authors frame the wall’s construction and tactical usage within the context of imperial frontier policy. For three centuries, auxiliary troops maintained this frontier until the fall of the Western Empire led to the soldiers' departure and the wall's decay.

Reinventing a Continent:...

The work collected here is drawn from lectures, essays and journalism. Ranging in tone from academic speculation to bare-knuckle polemic, with the occasional gleam of personal reminiscence, they interweave to form a vision of a decade in which the habits of centuries were hurled, by choice, into reverse. Defining the role of the writer in society was no longer an abstract theme to stir debate, but a pressing and dangerous necessity. The world of letters had to confront the urgent need to open up the franchise, hand over the levers and the engines of power: the need to reinvent an entire continent.
