Welcome to Mickle & More. The place where we believe there is a person for every book. That is a fact as sure as the sun will rise again tomorrow.
And in that belief lies our mission.
Firstly, to populate our shop with the most diverse collection of books we can possibly find. And then secondly, to have our shop reach every single home in South Africa (for now), creating the meeting ground between said person and their book(s). In time?… Global.
What specifically motivates this belief? Honestly, that’s a good question. And to say “Love for Books” seems to dilute the reality, because it is more and deeper than that. See, the thing is, books; actual human written and published books, are more than just pages and a cover, or an interesting story or fact. It is the place where authenticity lives. Stranger past meets stranger present on every single page. Mind meets mind. Imagination meets imagination. Hope, meets hope.
So if we were to bring an analogy into play here, see us as the most enthusiastic matchmakers you’ll ever encounter. And if in your mind’s eye you can see the joy, exhilaration and excitement that matchmaker experiences when they’ve brought the perfect pair together, then that will provide the slightest glimpse into the excitement and happiness we experience when we’ve been successful in introducing person to their book(s).
Why the name, Mickle and More. Well, it’s derived from two words that have their origin in Old English/Scottish. Mickle and Muckle.
The Famous Proverb - "Many a mickle makes a muckle"
The most famous pairing in the old Scottish proverb. This phrase means that small amounts or actions accumulate to create a large total.
Mickle - An archaic and Scottish word that means "great," "large," or "much." It refers to a large amount, great size, or a significant quantity.
More - fundamentally indicates a greater quantity, amount, degree, or size of something.
We apply that proverb in two ways:
1 - Books/stock
What started as just a book shelf or two with a few books, has turned into a catastrophe of books. We are overflowing at the brim with the most amazing titles (The Mickle result), all standing by for their moment in the spot light. Their little place in the public shelves of our shop. Yet, we believe we need More.
2 - People
With humble beginnings nearly two years ago, selling a select few books to a small group of people, we have journeyed on to this space where our aim, for now, is to reach every able human in our home country (The Mickle result). And then? As global as we possibly can. (The More)
