Black Swan Down

Well, I can only say I was jolly proud of that tin canoe I'd made with my own hands and had painted pitch black with some tarry goo I found in an old bucket after the road workers had been busy in our area. I was always on cloud nine when I could go onto the lake and gaze at all the birds and waterfowl on the open water and in the various passages winding among the reeds. To be honest, to me the lake was like a little paradise where I could always escape when things got too rough for me on the home front. But maybe I should've taken serious note of Captain Hook’s warnings at the time, because of the ghastly drama that was to take place later on . . .

Scott Fitzgerald’s legendary novel captures the dazzling glamor and the underlying disillusionment of a generation desperate for reinvention."

Seed Corn and Other Short...

Anna Blair, author of best-selling Tea at Miss Cranston's, has written 22 short stories, with very different settings: some in her native Scotland, some in Malaysia where she lived for a few years and others from North America where she has grandchildren. Some of her Scottish stories have a historical context, but most of the stories were prompted by some incident or encounter which left her wondering what might have led up to it, or what might follow. The stories are often deeply touching, but her gentle sense of humour prevents them becoming sentimental. The varied geographical and cultural settings add a richness to the collection.
