Well, I can only say I was jolly proud of that tin canoe I'd made with my own hands and had painted pitch black with some tarry goo I found in an old bucket after the road workers had been busy in our area. I was always on cloud nine when I could go onto the lake and gaze at all the birds and waterfowl on the open water and in the various passages winding among the reeds. To be honest, to me the lake was like a little paradise where I could always escape when things got too rough for me on the home front.
