The Arabs and the...

In The Arabs and the Holocaust, Gilbert Achcar dismantles the monolithic stereotypes often applied to the Arab world's perception of the Shoah. Drawing on deep historical research, the book examines the distinct political and intellectual currents in the Middle East—ranging from liberal to Islamist—and analyzes how these groups historically responded to Nazism, Zionism, and the establishment of Israel. Achcar offers a nuanced, perceptive study of the competing narratives that continue to shape the Israeli-Palestinian conflict today.

The Compassionate English...

In The Compassionate Englishwoman, Robert Eales tells the remarkable story of Emily Hobhouse, the British humanitarian whose efforts exposed the suffering of Boer women and children during the Anglo-Boer War. Travelling alone through war-torn South Africa, Hobhouse investigated conditions in the concentration camps established by the British military and campaigned tirelessly for reform. Eales recounts her courageous mission, the resistance she faced from the British government and press, and the lasting impact of her work on public awareness of the humanitarian crisis. The Caged Bird Sang No...

This is Major General Philip Efiong’s account of the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War (1967–1970). As a key player and second-in-command to Biafran leader General Ojukwu, Efiong details the January and July 1966 coups and the ensuing ethnic conflicts. Forced to escape to the East after the second coup, Efiong recounts the breakdown of talks that led to the Eastern Region's secession and the outbreak of war in July 1967. During the conflict, Efiong served as Chief of General Staff. When Ojukwu fled, he handed power to Efiong, who performed the final task of leading a delegation to Lagos to negotiate peace and deliver Biafra’s surrender.

Day Of The Assassins

Acclaimed historian Michael Burleigh examines assassination as a special category of political violence and asks whether, like a contagious disease, it can be catching. Focusing chiefly on the last century and a half, Burleigh takes readers from Europe, Russia, Israel and the United States to the Congo, India, Iran, Laos, Rwanda, South Africa and Vietnam. And, as we travel, we revisit notable assassinations, among them Leon Trotsky, Hendrik Verwoerd, Juvénal Habyarimana, Indira Gandhi, Yitzhak Rabin and Jamal Khashoggi.
