BOOK GRADING STANDARDS

Important Notes for Buyers

· Ex-Library Books: We grade ex-library copies on their physical wear. They will always be declared as "Ex-Library" in the listing and the photos will support this.

· Africana/Collectibles: Age is taken into consideration when grading old collectible books.

At-a-Glance Quick Summaries

· Excellent: Almost new with only the slightest signs of handling.

· Very Good: A beautiful, clean copy that has been read but carefully preserved.

· Good: A classic secondhand copy showing honest reading wear—reliable and complete.

· Fair: A well-used copy with heavy wear, but structurally solid and 100% complete.

· Reading Copy: A heavily worn budget copy—battered but fully complete and readable.

Detailed Grading Tiers

Excellent

· Covers: Very neat with only the slightest signs of handling and only very minor imperfections, if any.

· Spine: Uncreased.

· Pages: Very neat. No highlighting or stains. (May have a neat owner's name or short message written inside).

· Hardcover Boards & Dust Jacket: Stiff, straight covers. The jacket looks bright and neat with only minimal wear along the edges, if any.

Very Good

· Covers: Neat and presentable. May show a small corner crease or curled corner or a small, clean, closed tear on the edge. Light surface scuffs are acceptable if the rest of the book looks great.

· Spine: Neat. May show just a few faint, minor reading lines. May have very light rubbing at the top or bottom edges.

· Pages: Clean and neat. No writing, highlighting, or stains.

· Foxing/Toning: Pages look clean, but may show very light, even yellowing from age around the edges.

· Hardcover Boards & Dust Jacket: Corners or spine ends might be slightly softened or nudged. The jacket is neat but may feature minor creases, minor edge wear, or a very small tear/s. Larger jacket may be acceptable if the rest of the book is in excellent condition.

Good

· Covers: May show normal wear like mild creasing, small edge tears, or chipping.

· Spine: May have visible reading creases, a slight lean, or a gentle curve, but the binding remains tight and secure.

· Pages: Clean and clear overall. May have a bookstore stamp, price mark, or previous owner's name. Might include a tiny bit of highlighting/underlining/notes (which will always be noted in the description).

· Foxing & Moisture: Pages may show normal, mild yellowing from age. May feature light brown spotting (foxing) on the outside edges. Faint, dry water marks on the margins that haven't warped the paper are acceptable provided the book is otherwise in good condition and the marks are hardly visible. Water marks will always be mentioned as a note under the grading tier image provided.

· Hardcover Boards & Dust Jacket: May have dented corners, scuffed fabric, or small bits of exposed cardboard at the tips. The jacket might be missing entirely, or may show noticeable edge wear, small chips, and medium tears.

Fair

· Covers: Heavily used copy that may show clear scuffing, deep creases, or larger tears. The clear plastic laminate on the cover may be slightly peeling.

· Spine: May exhibit deep reading creases, a noticeable lean, or a slightly loose binding. However, no pages are falling out.

· Pages: 100% readable. May feature old stamps, names, or handwritten notes, underlining in pen or pencil or highlighting.

· Foxing & Moisture: May have noticeable brown spotting (foxing) on the edges and inside pages. Pages may be distinctly yellowed or tanned from age, but the paper remains strong. Dry water marks causing light wrinkling is acceptable provided it does not affect reading and the rest of the book is in fair to good condition. Water damage will always be mentioned as a note under the grading tier image provided.

· Hardcover Boards & Dust Jacket: Corners may be heavily worn down, slightly showing the cardboard underneath. The jacket might be heavily torn, taped, chipped, or completely missing.

Reading Copy

· Covers: Covers may be heavily battered, deeply creased, badly torn, or peeling away.

· Spine: May be cracked open, severely warped, or broken.

· Pages: A budget copy that may feature heavy notes, extensive highlighting, severe brown spotting, or dark age-browning. Pages might be loose or torn, but the book remains readable.

· Foxing & Moisture: May have severe brown spotting (foxing) on the edges and inside pages. Pages may be distinctly yellowed or tanned from age. Dry water marks causing light to moderate wrinkling is acceptable. Water damage will always be mentioned as a note under the grading tier image provided.

· Hardcover Boards & Dust Jacket: May show severe damage, heavy structural wear, or major pieces missing entirely.
